Walking into your first martial arts class can feel like a big step, especially if you’ve never trained before. Here at Your Club, we want you to arrive feeling confident about what happens next, not nervous about the unknown.
Here’s what a typical first class at Your Club looks like, along with a few tips to help you get the most out of it.
Before You Arrive
Wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in, such as a t-shirt and joggers or leggings. Most students train barefoot or in light indoor trainers, so leave your outdoor shoes at the door. Arrive around 10 minutes early so our instructors can say hello and answer any questions before the class begins.
The Warm-Up
Every class starts with a short warm-up to raise the heart rate and loosen up the joints. It’s a great way to ease into training, whatever your fitness level, and our instructors will always show you how to adapt any movement.

Learning the Basics
New students aren’t expected to know anything on day one. Your first class focuses on the fundamentals – stances, basic movements and how the class is structured – so you can follow along with the group straight away.
Partner and Group Work
Martial arts is as much about teamwork and respect as it is technique. You’ll likely practise with a partner or in small groups, guided closely by an instructor. Don’t worry about getting everything perfect; everyone remembers their first class.
After Class
We usually finish with a quick cool-down and a chance to chat with the instructor about how you found it. Many students leave their first session surprised by how welcoming and supportive the environment is.
